The district has learnt of the passing of Bill Hood who was a member of Scouting from 1939 – 2018.
Bill passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday the 26th January 2021. He was a respected and well liked Scout in the Wath upon Dearne and Montgomery Districts over many years. He started Scouting as a Wolf Cub with the 29th Doncaster (Wath St. James) in 1939 and continued through Scouts and Senior Scouts. Around 1949 he started the ‘Pack B’ in the Group.
Later, after conscription, he joined the Newhill Scout Group as a leader in the Don and Dearne District. When the Don and Dearne District amalgamated with the Rotherham District in 1974, the Group became the 28th. Rotherham Montgomery (Newhill, Wath) Group.
He held many other positions during his Scouting life including Scout Leader, Group Scout Leader and latterly Group Chairman at the 28th/48th Wath (Newhill) Group. He was also the Assistant District Commissioner for Cub Scouts for many years. He only ceased helping with the Group in 2018 when his health prevented his mobility.
Bill was awarded the ‘Silver Wolf’ the highest award a Scouter can receive.
Bill, and Janet his late wife, who was the Cub Scout Leader, spent their life together helping to promote Scouting and helping hundreds, if not thousands of children to gain self-reliance and prepare them for their adulthood.
